Today’s Tech Wrap-Up

1. Brave browser dumps Google search in France, Germany (CNet)

What we refer to as our “local browser” jettisoned Google as its search engine for users in France and Germany. The ad-blocking Brave browser of San Francisco replaced Google with Qwant, a privacy-oriented search engine in France. Brave CEO Brendan Eich says the change is a way Brave can fight back against “ongoing privacy invasions from technology giants.” The Brave-Qwant partnership brings Brave users “the first search engine that protects the freedoms and privacy of its users and ensures the preservation of the digital ecosystem.”

2. Card-stealing code that pwned British Airways, Ticketmaster pops up on more sites via hacked Javascript (The Register)

Credit card-stealing code infected a Feedify Javascript library this week with MageCart malware. 4000 websites around the world use Feedify to engage and retain customers. E-commerce websites with Feedify embed code essentially distributed MageCart to visitors resulting in stolen credit card data.

3. Microsoft’s Windows 10 October update will kill off Disk Cleanup (The Inquirer)

Used by generations of Windows users to clean up temporary files, downloads and more, the Disk Cleanup utility is getting replaced. The replacement, Windows Storage Sense, links users with OneDrive to free up local storage. The “sense” part of Windows Storage Sense implies an automatic optimization of locally stored files. OpenSSL is a project that builds toolkits for TLS and SSL protocols. OpenSSL 1.1.1 launched on Wednesday bringing support for TLS 1.3. Applications that use OpenSSL should see improved HTTPS connection times. The new version also supports eleven new cryptographic algorithms.

5. MacOS Mojave officially launches on September 24 (Digital Trends)

The days are ticking down to the moment when Mac users get a free macOS upgrade. Two hands worth of fingers is all they’ll need for the countdown. Mojave arrives on Monday, September 24. With it comes night mode to reduce eye strain, and a refreshed Mac App Store design. Also worth noting is some iOS apps may cross-over to macOS in this release.

6. Internet group backs ‘national’ data privacy approach (Reuters)

The Internet Association is a group comprised of 40 internet and tech firms. They back an effort to modernize data privacy laws in the United States. Steps could include how companies use consumers’ personal information, and how consumers delete or correct that information. Any new rules should be technology and sector neutral.
