Watch the Video: How to enable Windows 10 dark mode
If you search Windows 10 Settings for dark mode, the search will come up empty. But don’t despair. Prior to its Anniversary Update, configuring a form of Windows 10 dark mode required an obscure edit to the Windows registry. Although a regedit is no longer required to enable Windows 10 dark mode, the feature is somewhat scattered. Separate configuration on the theme and browser levels may be required to get you close to the dark theme for which you may be looking.
Choose your app mode
Dark mode for apps is located within Windows Settings (Windows logo key+I) under Personalization > Colors.
Scroll down to Choose your app mode. Click the Dark radio button to choose the dark mode.
Apps that support the dark app mode will turn dark. You may need to log out of Windows and log back in to activate the change.
Choose a theme
If things are not dark enough for you, click the High contrast settings link just below the Light and Dark radio buttons in Colors. From the Choose a theme pulldown menu, choose High Contrast Black, then click the Apply button.
Yeah, we know — that’s pretty black. But it’s there if you want it. If High Contrast Black is too overwhelming, return to the Choose a theme pulldown menu and choose None to revert to your previous setting. Don’t forget to click the Apply button to save the setting.
Choose a theme for Microsoft Edge
Windows 10 includes the Microsoft Edge web browser. Edge has its own theme setting, and it is in Light mode by default. To change it from Light to Dark mode, launch Microsoft Edge. Click the More button (the button with the 3 horizontal dots in the upper right corner), then click Settings.
Click the pulldown menu under Choose a theme, and select Dark.
Choose a dark Accent color
If your hunt for a dark mode is more for aesthetics, try choosing a dark color as the Accent color. The accent color is located under Windows Settings > Personalization > Colors. With a darker color selected, toggle the Show color on Start, taskbar, and action center and Show color on title bar buttons from Off to On.
With no definitive single way to enable Windows 10 dark mode, plenty of individual options exist to help you achieve a comfortable dark look-and-feel.
